Prof. Büchler is professor of surgery and chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. After studying medicine in Heidelberg and Berlin he completed his medical license and MD thesis in 1980. He underwent his surgical specialist fellowship at the Universities of Berlin and Ulm. He became associate professor and vice chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Ulm in 1987.
In 1993 he became professor of surgery and chairman of the Department of Visceral and Transplantation Surgery at the University of Bern, Switzerland.
In 2001 he returned to Germany to become professor of surgery and chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Heidelberg and founded the European Pancreas Center in Heidelberg - Center of Excellence for Surgical diseases of the pancreas.
He is a well-known expert in the field of hepatobilary surgery, colorectal surgery, and especially in the field of pancreatic surgery. He authored or coauthored more than 2200 scientific manuscripts mainly focused on pancreatic surgery and pancreatic cancer.
Prof. Büchler was president of the German Society for General and GI Surgery, the German Surgical Society, the European Pancreatic Club and the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association among others. He is a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and he also is a honorary member of the American Surgical Association, the American College of Surgeons, and the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England and Scotland. Prof. Büchler has received multiple scientific awards and is member of the editorial boards of many well-known scientific journals.
